Acronym soup - wifi, mifi, vpn, wpa, blablahblah
Published: Tue, 07/12/16
I wrote the info below this morning. You haven't read it yet. Please read it today.
Last night, I was leading my monthly mastermind. As always, I connect my laptop to the big TV in the room and use wifi to connect to the interwebs...
And it hit me. Of course, towards the end of the night.
But it terrified me.
My firewall wasn't on!
EEKS!!!
And then I remembered I wrote this post about connecting to wifi networks. So I thought I would share my foible with you as a cautionary tale.
Now, as far as I can tell, I wasn't hacked. But I was definitely exposed. And it's not a good feeling.
I strongly encourage you to read the post and follow the advice.
Don't be like me last night! D'oh!!!
In that post, I lay out the best practices for connecting to public wifi. I updated it recently when somebody asked me about "mifi."
I do recommend a few products to safeguard you against prying eyes.
- A firewall - I use ZoneAlarm
- A VPN - I love the name and the product - Hide My Ass! (and it's on sale right now - cheap insurance)
- And something to erase your browsing history (besides just simply clearing your cache and history) - I use CC Cleaner (short for Crap Cleaner). Check out the bundle it's in below.
StackSocial is having an "Ultimate PC Bundle" sale (sorry not sorry, Mac users):
- CC Cleaner Pro
- Scrivener - I've been dying to try this and now I will!
- Scapple - super smart mind-mapping tool. I already own it, but now I own two :)
- and 7 more (including a neat-looking program that supposedly lets you download YouTube videos)
I'm glad I didn't get hacked last night. You can bet I'll be following my own advice in the future. I still can't believe I turned off my firewall at some point and forgot to turn it back on. STOOPID!!!
Until next time,Bill
