Content Marketing 101

An excerpt from my book on content:

No doubt, you have heard the adage, “Content is King.” And it is. But you have to publish more than just content; it has to be compelling, interesting, unique, entertaining, and valuable to your consumer. EVERYTHING you do with your content should be laser-focused on your ideal consumer.

Publishing “content” for its own sake is a recipe for content marketing disaster. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen a blogger, for example, pump out blog post after blog post for a few months straight, only to become disillusioned, bored, tired, and frustrated over his lack of progress (which usually means that his blog is doing poorly in some metric he thinks is important).

Don’t just publish for the sake of it. You need a content strategy. You may have heard the term, “content marketing." What that really means is that every piece of content you publish has to have a reason for existence.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS – Ask “For what purpose did I publish that content?”

It could be a blog post, video, infographic, or something else (app, whitepaper, slideshow, book, etc.). Ensure, for the sake of your consumers, that your content makes sense, that it’s as much as possible timely and evergreen, and that it leads your consumer down a path that he wants to take (and that leads to a valuable transaction between you and him).

Blogging purely for fun or self-worth is awesome, but it certainly doesn’t pay the bills in most cases!

If you want to be a successful content creator, one whose content garners considerable traffic, good numbers of subscribers, and paying customers, then you will want to read – IN DEPTH AND MULTIPLE TIMES – the following sections...
