Don't be a doofus - diversify your traffic sources

I'm an "SEO guy". I like the idea of getting free traffic for my websites and I like beating Google.

But there's nothing worse than seeing weeks' or months' worth of SEO work go down the drain because Google changed its algorithm and no longer favors--maybe even penalizes--sites like yours.

It happens all the time.

So SEO--while supremely beneficial most of the time--is not a reliably consistent method for driving traffic.

I'm not saying you shouldn't care about SEO. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't pay it any attention. I do. I make sure my sites have good onpage SEO and I get quality backlinks.

However, it's not the only thing I do with my sites.

I make sure that I get good social sharing and engagement. I use my announcement networks to get the word out about important updates I make to my sites.

The one thing I've found to be super-reliable and effective is advertising through Facebook.

It's pretty amazing. It's simply the easiest way to get highly-targeted traffic to any of your websites. Plus, SEO traffic really isn't free -- it takes a ton of effort to get high rankings with the search engines, so what you may save in money you lose in time. Usually by a wide margin.

You can hyper-focus on a very narrow (and deep) segment of your consumer base.

For example, let's say you run a fitness website, where you tell people how to get fit, stay in shape, lose weight, or build muscle. With Facebook advertising, you can drive a ton of traffic to any one of your web pages that is comprised of only men aged 18 to 34 from the United States who have a college degree.

You could also target women over the age of 40 with kids who are interested in Jillian Michaels.

If you can think of a market segment you want to reach, you can reach it with Facebook advertising. It's really simple. And usually very cheap. In fact, the more you can focus, the lower your advertising costs.

It's a thing of beauty.

You also don't have to use FB advertising for driving traffic. You can use it to get "likes" to your Business pages, subscribers to your opt-in page, or buyers to your product pages. It's not just for generic traffic.

There are plenty of resources online, on the Kindle, and on Udemy that claim to show you the ropes where Facebook advertising is concerned. My go-to source is FB Ad Basics. It's where I learned the basics about the advertising platform and what I used to write my first ads.
