He owned a bat with a distinct split grip for expert control and ran like a wild man on the base paths, leaping into fielders with his sharpened metal spikes sailing towards the bases.
Yes, you read that right: He sharpened his spikes. He stole a lot of bases, too. In fact, it was Lou Brock who finally eclipsed Cobb’s stolen base record…
But I digress.
Ty was the greatest hitter in terms of lifetime batting average in the history of major league baseball.
Of course, Cobb was a Hall-of-Famer.
He played from 1905 to 1928. He fought in WWI in 1918, too.
One day, long after he retired from Major League Baseball, Ty was at a minor league baseball game and a sportswriter asked him, “What do you think you’d hit if you were playing ball nowadays?
“I know you hit .367 when you were playing.
“What do you think you’d hit if you were playing nowadays?”
Ty Cobb said, “Well, if I was playing nowadays, I’d probably only hit about 300.”
The sportswriter said, “Mr. Cobb, I thought you were going to say 400.
“The pitching’s not as good as when you played.
“The ball’s a lot livelier.
“There’s this artificial turf, and ground balls just whip through the infield.
“Why would you only hit 300?”
