Trump.

What just happened?

How did you feel?

The name evokes a visceral reaction in everybody.

Why?

And, What are those feelings?

First, the what. Then the why.

Opposing feelings in about half the population. Half love him, the other half hates him. Half think he's brilliant; the others, a buffoon.

Some a patriot. Others a bigot.

But the feelings are deep.

I don't know anybody who is like "Meh," when they hear "Trump."

There are people, especially the "pundits" who will have you think they don't have strong feelings about him. They poo-poo his chances, call him dangerous, discount his abilities.

But you know what? I think Trump is going to win.

Why? That's another email or blog post.

Now, why does the word, "Trump," evoke such feelings?

He knows how to segment his audience. Think of Donald Trump as an expert hunter:

He chooses his audience, targets them, and separates them from the herd. And then goes for the kill.

Trump says things that his audience believes in. He doesn't really care that rubs the others the wrong way.

Trump does that with his enemies, too.

But here's the deal: He truly knows how to separate his fans from the herd. What's left over are his enemies.

And then he's left with a small crowd who are passionate about their man. While that crowd may be small, they are much more likely to act.

Trump is a ruthless business man and negotiator. He doesn't much care about consequences, other than:

He wants to win. He wants his competition (also his enemy) to lose. Business is a zero-sum game to him.

And he chases the win at all costs. He spares no expense.

It's just that simple.

Now, I'm not recommending you approach your business the way Trump approaches his.

What I am saying is watch him. Pay attention to how he recruits fans and segments his audience: He wants "insiders." Everybody else is an outsider.

They are not part of Club Trump.

You can learn a lot from Trump.

Until next time,

Bill
