Matt Lauer got canned

When will it stop?

Will men in power ever stop groping women?

I should be careful to say that men in power grope other men, too.

It's all just so sick.

But the floodgates are fully OPEN. Get ready to hear a LOT more of these sorts of stories.

And before you say it's not just men in power...oh, it is. If you're a man, almost by default and without many exceptions, you ARE in power over a woman. You just are.

You can't erase 100s of years of "norms." You can try...

"So, Bill, what's this got to do with marketing?"

I say, "Everything."

Think about it:

Matt Lauer RULED the Today Show and NBC News. He was the poster boy for "good guys." (Okay, not like Tom Hanks, but close.)

He had a family. He hadn't had any scandals as far as I know until yesterday.

Apparently, his power was so great that he was able to keep all this nastiness in a bottle.

He had a great reputation, at least to the "outer circle." It's now coming out that people knew about this for a very long time. But it never got out.

Now it's out. And he's fired. He probably won't be hired for another major network. He's got enough money to start his own news channel/show, I'm sure. So it's probably not the last time we'll hear from him.

But he's tarnished and unemployed at the moment (rightly so).

He clearly wasn't thinking long-term. He was thinking with his "little head" if you know what I mean.

Marketing is long-term. Sales is today. If you market right, sales can be forever. Marketing leads to sales...but sales is NOT marketing. One is short-term. Short shelf life. The other is the long game. Takes a while to build that marketing mojo.

In his interest to "make the sale," he forgot about marketing.

Of course, to the outsider, he was marketing. He did all the right things. He was golden.

But to his "stakeholders," he was tainted. And the taint got him in the end.

BOOM!

Moving on: Today's book finds

Make it a great day!

Bill
